Staff Bios

Hello. My name is Helen Andrascik and this is my second year as a "Lunch Lady" at Mellon. I started work here when the pandemic put an end to my other part time occupations...vision screener in preschools and daycares and freelance musician. I was a full time violinist with orchestras in Shreveport, Oklahoma City and Savannah over a span of 20 years until my husband won an audition with the PSO and I was whisked back to the Burgh where I grew up. We raised three kids in Mt. Lebanon who all went to Mellon and made us proud musical theater/dance/band/orchestra/hockey parents. My day is not over when I leave Mellon. Most days I give private lessons at home. I am looking forward to the summer because I am tired!

Hi, my name is Barb DeMaio and I have been a cafeteria worker/cashier at Mellon for the past 23 years and will be retiring this May. I have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. My husband and I share the love of all sports, but especially football. We love to travel and cruise, but especially love spending time in our log cabin that we built.

Hi my name is Denise Fink. I work in the school cafeteria. My area is Ala carte when it is open. I also fill in for our cook when necessary. I have worked with this great group of people for 13 years. My husband and I have two sons who have both graduated from Mt. Lebanon and are both getting married next year. I love impromptu trips and spending time at our camp up north. I enjoy kayaking, swimming and fishing.

Hi. My name is Diane Slate and I've been the cook at Mellon for the past year and a half.  I've been working in Mt. Lebanon's food service department for the past 19 years in varying capacities.  Here at Mellon, I prepare and serve breakfast, place orders to U.S. Foods and Nickles bakery, prepare lunch and update the daily production records. I enjoy cooking and have taught dessert classes for the summer enrichment program a few years back. I also enjoy painting and have been on the Mt. Lebanon summer paint crew for many years.  Prior to my husband and I raising our two children, I worked for 15 years as a secretary for a construction supply company.  I enjoy our game nights with friends and family,  refinishing furniture, doing yardwork, sitting around the backyard firepit and our recent road trip to South Dakota.

Yearbook Announcement

Hi, Mellon Parents & Guardians...

We are just a few weeks away from yearbook distribution, which means the 2021-2022 school year is wrapping up!

I just sent homeroom teachers the final list of students who ordered a yearbook, so they can review it with the kids.  If you did not order one for your student and would like to, there is still a chance to purchase one on June 1, 2022.

If you think there is an error with your order, please visit www.yearbookforever.com and enter your email into the find an order window to verify your order.  I attached a document to illustrate.  Please note the purchase date on the receipt.

Finally, any student interested in purchasing a yearbook should report to ROOM 202 on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 during homeroom with $40 CASH ONLY.  The good news is that I should have approximately 30 extra copies for sale on a first-come basis.

Please email me with any questions.  I hope everyone has a fantastic summer!

~ Rich Hines, Mellon Middle School

PTA Council News
PTA Council Committee Chairs Needed

PTA Council is looking for some volunteers to serve as committee chairs for the 2022-2023 school year. Council committee chair positions are generally less hands-on and more administrative than unit committee chair positions. For the most part, you facilitate communications between unit committee chairs and help promote council-wide initiatives. It's a great way to become involved at the Council level - especially if you have kids in multiple buildings!

ARTS IN EDUCATION: This chairperson coordinates the PTA Reflections Arts in Education program throughout the district. This includes arranging for judging of entries at the Council level and notification of students, teachers, and administrators of their advancement through the levels of the Arts in Education program.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Coordinates a district-wide community service activities for all PTAs to participate in. This was on hiatus due to COVID, but we'd like to bring it back next year. In the past we have done a district-wide food drive for SHIM.

CULTURAL ARTS: Coordinates communication between elementary school Cultural Arts Committee chairs to share ideas and discuss combining events for cost-savings.

NEWSLETTER and WEBSITE Coordinator: Serves as the PTA contact for newsletter articles and notices from the school district, community and other outside groups that are of district-wide interest; and disseminate such district wide newsletter articles to each of the other school district PTA units as received. Shall coordinate with the district and the local units technology initiatives involving the PTA website and any other technology initiatives, including social media, pertinent to the Council or local units. Updates the PTA website and Community Flyers pages.

PARENT/SCHOOL EDUCATION: May sponsor annual or semiannual district wide programs on issues affecting education or parenting. Methods of communication may include articles for PTA newsletters, social media campaigns, or with budget availability, flyers and/or posters.

If you are interested in serving on one of these committees, or would like more information about one of them, please reach out to outgoing PTA Council President Bonnie Dougherty at bonnie_dougherty@hotmail.com.
